Themed Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy Theme: Dinosaurs

We proved good speech is not extinct during dinosaur week!  I have never seen so many boys excited about speech therapy as I saw last week.

Books for Speech Therapy

I had THREE different books that I used throughout the week.

The most popular was “What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night: A Very Messy Adventure.”  This book was such a huge hit!!  Think plastic dinosaurs meet “Toy Story.”  Most kids have plastic dinosaurs so that is what makes it even more fun!  I asked, “What if your dinosaurs come to life at night?”  The looks on their faces were seriously priceless!  The dinosaurs in this book cause lots of trouble, from chewing on shoes to trashing the house!

Another book I used with my speech therapy clients was “How do Dinosaurs Say Good Night.”  This is a good book for your younger clients working on language and articulation goals.  The story is short and simple.  I always like to talk about how inappropriate the dinosaurs behavior is and how one should act when going to bed.  I usually talk about the child’s bedtime routine each night too.

The last book I used was a touchy feely book from Usborne.  It is an older book that I have had for a while.  I like it for the textures and the simple opposites it teaches.  You can find the book here.

Sensory Bin for Speech Therapy

Last year I had a big sensory bin that I struggled to carry into each session.  This year I changed it up!  I kept seeing this cute little organizers everywhere.  They were popping up in my emails from all my favorite craft store and were ON SALE!  Then I read a blog post from The Speech Bubble.  MINI SENSORY BINS!!   Duh!  So I bought the organizer over spring break.  Then I found a bin of plastic dinosaurs at my favorite red circles store.  The dinosaurs fit in the mini sensory bin!!!  I used beans in the bin as well as a few big green pompoms (bushes) and added the dinosaurs!

Craft for Speech Therapy

This is a simple craft to use for speech therapy.  The kids enjoyed it.

Materials List:

1 Large Paper Plate

Paint/Crayons ( I gave my clients the choice between 2 colors)

1 Wiggly Eye for each child

Construction Paper of assorted colors (I used purple and green)

Scissors/Tacky Glue/Glue

To Complete:

  1. Cut the plate in half. Give one half to the child to paint.  Cut a head and tail from the other piece.  Be sure to pain the head and tail too!
  2. Glue head, tail and legs on the paper plate half.
  3. Glue the “spots” onto the dinosaur’s body.
  4. Glue the eye on his head and allow to dry.

Apps for Speech Therapy

This is a great little app!  It’s perfect for my young preschool clients that have difficulty with some of my other language apps.  I like to use this one as a reward at the end of a session or during a session to engage the child with language targets.

You can even click on the paint palette at the bottom of the screen to create your own puzzles!

You can find several of my activities used in therapy here!  My TeachersPayTeachers site has activities to work on articulation and language goals.
