Hands On Therapy Activities

Apple Pie Sensory Bin in Speech Therapy!

Apple week in speech therapy is always so much fun!  It’s taken a different turn since I left the schools several years ago.  In the schools, we could compare the different types of apples, cook with them, eat different apple products like apple chips and cider.  Speech therapy in the homes is very different.  It’s hard to drag all that stuff around and keep it cold (and NON-CONTAMINATED!!)  This is where the sensory bin comes into play!  I tried this bin out this week and love it!  You do it all for less than $6!!

Here’s what you need:

Fake apples (I choose small ones but you could use big and small)

Container of oatmeal

Box with lid (I did a shoebox size but you can do whatever size!)

Ground Cinnamon, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg

Measuring spoons and

cups

Now that you have everything, let’s get it ready for those speech therapy sessions!

Pour the NON-COOKED oatmeal in your box.  I didn’t measure.  I just poured until I was happy.  Then sprinkle 1 tsp of nutmeg (more if your box is bigger than mine).  I sprinkled cinnamon until I was happy with the smell.  Not too strong but enough so that I could smell it.  If I had to say, I probably used 3-4 tablespoons of cinnamon.  Mix it all together with a spoon.  Now place your cinnamon sticks and apples in there.  Since my box is smaller, I placed measuring spoons (not cups) in mine.  Remember, I travel with mine so it has to be mobile!

Ta Da!! Finished Product!!

As you can see, my apples have numbers on them.  That’s because I used it for articulation!  Pick an apple and say your target word the number of times on the apple.  So if you pull an apple with 2, say your word 2 times.  I also added a small loaf tin to keep all the apples corralled.  This was just one of the sensory activities we had this week!
