Themed Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy Theme Review: Down on the Farm!

A farm theme is so cute and easy for a speech therapy session!  You can use the theme and adapt it to so many different clients on your speech therapy caseload.  In this blog post, I rounded up my favorite farm books to use in my speech therapy sessions as well as favorite activities and toys!  Your speech clients are sure to have a blast!

Books:

“Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type”

This whole series is a kid favorite!  Once I explained what a typewriter was, they laughed and enjoyed the story.  I like to use this one with my first graders and up.  You could probably use it for kindergarten too.

“Where is the Green Sheep?”

I love this book for my preschool to kindergarten age clients.  We can talk about colors, simple opposites, “where” questions, and spatial concepts.  We spend the entire book looking for the green sheep so I am constantly asking, “Do you see the green sheep?” hoping for the child to answer “yes/no” questions correctly!

“Mrs. Wishy Washy”

Ok, I could seriously write an ENTIRE post on ways to use this book in speech therapy.  (Hint: I am working on it as I type this post!!)  Love this book for toddlers to kindergarten.  I think there were several years in my school SLP days that I stretched it to 1st-2nd grade!  Love Mrs. Wishy Washy!!!!  (like super big puffy heart this book!!)

When it comes to toys and such, I love Melissa and Doug’s Chunky Farm Animal puzzle!  My speech therapy kiddos also love Fisher Price’s Little People Barn.   I can get great language (SPONTANEOUSLY) while playing with that barn.  Any session that I don’t have to “force” the communication is a HUGE success!

For my articulation kiddos, we “built” a barn (don’t worry, blog post is in the works for tomorrow!) using our articulation words.  It took me a little while to work out the “kinks” but I finally got it!

As I wrote this post, I discovered I wanted to go into more detail on a couple of ideas.  So watch for those!  Fall is a PERFECT time for a farm theme in speech therapy!!!

What is your favorite farm themed activity to use in speech therapy?
